Broad spectrum view of Social Media (Schools and Colleges, Series-1)

by Admin 12. July 2010 20:31

Broad spectrum view means, the value or presence of social media in your daily routine life to your business, products promotion on social media. You can find our blog posts or articles in social media, how companies are using social media. But in this post we are going to elaborate social media in broader terms, with this being the first part of the series, and you will find good no. of posts on social media from every walk of life.

Two days ago, I went over to pick my niece from her school. It usually takes some time, before she comes out of her class and I had to wait in corridor. During this time, I found a group of kids eagerly discussing about something, and the curious side of me, made me pay more attention to what the topic was about. To my surprise, they were discussing about ‘Farmville’. To the average Parent or Teacher in the school, Farmville sounds more like the name of place or a movie. But surely that was not the Farmville; these kids were so engrossed about.

So what is “Farmville”? Well for starters- Farmville is the name of a game in Facebook having more than 65 million monthly active users, maximum by any online game in world. The kids were discussing about how they played this game, and what was really interesting was that, one of the kids was in the 6th stage of Farmville! I could never complete the fourth stage.

Facebook, Orkut have become like slang today with every kid in school required to have an ID on these sites. You can even be teased or ragged by your friends at school if you say that you don’t know what is Facebook or orkut. Nowadays children adapt new tech things very quickly. If their parents have Blackberry cell phone, I am quite sure the kid in the house will be teaching his Dad, a thing or two about ‘texting’ or checking mail. Kids are so at ease with technology that it has prompted to make Facebook to think on bringing in a child safety application feature for school kids.

Twitter is another popular social media site, where college students love to follow their favorite Bollywood stars, Cricketers and Celebrities, who in turn keep tweeting about their life, new film releases, their likes and dislikes. Nowadays in the Tech or Management colleges you will hardly find any student who is not following them. In college canteens what Salman Khan said to Shahrukh in twitter, or what Amitabh Bachan wrote on his blog are the topics of hot discussion. One of them proudly tells the others that Ambithab Bachan replied back to one of the comments he posted.

My point to say is that trend has been changed, in early days it was the new watch or new shoes a teenager used to show his friends, and today it has changed to a re tweet, how many follower, friends you have in twitter or Facebook.

Now let's discuss broad spectrum

With the growing popularity of Facebook, there would be a day when every school or college will be required to maintain a Facebook Page.

Schools will announce their events and put up the topper students of class on the wall of their Facebook Page. The incentives for students “perform well and get highlighted on the School FB Page”

Parents can comment or can give suggestions to school Management. They can even post their grievances – like maybe the children have something to say about the way they are taught by their Maths teacher, and if the opinion goes northward, then there be no other option for the school management but to sit up and take some action.

Moreover Parents can interact with Teachers and know about their child performance in Facebook.

Same is in Tech and Management colleges, a student can ask his lecturer for a link on some numerical problem or case studies. And you can get best possible answer from your faculty without any hesitation.

All this makes things a bit more easier for busy parents, who may not be otherwise able to devote additional time, to know what his/her ward is doing at school. Being a highly interactive medium, Social media can bring about quicker results in communication and moving thing s forward.

Before ending this post – I would like to add that it may not to be wrong to say that Social Media can bring about one of the biggest tech revolutions in our daily life.

by Admin 28. June 2010 01:47

From top MNC’s to small medium sized companies, social media has become an innovative platform to promote businesses. The number of users and the growth rate of social media sites is providing for a level playing field for companies of all sizes to market their brands online. Using social media web sites like FaceBook, LinkedIn,Twitter, Digg ; business owners can do a lot of great marketing stuff, like event promotion, customer relationship management, News posting about their businesses, job openings, Videos of  products and a lot more. Studies have shown that social media marketing helps in promoting the brand and in spreading the word around to prospective customers, faster.

“The Cone Business social media study” in USA showed that

93% of US citizen want that a company should have presence on social media sites,

86% people want that companies should use social media sites for interacting with customers

More than 60% of people regularly interact with these companies in social media sites

More than 43% people say, company should use social media sites for solving their problems

And more than 40% people believe that companies should use social media sites for getting feedback from customers.

Companies like Ford, Dell, Coca-cola, Nike etc are the few examples of corporates who have taken to social media in a big way to promote their brands.

Tips for using social media marketing

The first step is creating your account in social media sites with detailed information of your product and services. Don’t leave any information blank in your company profile. Use your company logo in your profile picture, and mention your company URL wherever prompted for. This will help the customers or users in locating your company web site, and indirectly help in driving visitors to your site.

Another important aspect is to mine data regarding visitor activity on your social media & web pages. You need to find out which pages, they spend more time on, and which they exist earlier. When it comes to statistics of your social media sites, you need to understand, if your visitors  spend more time on your Facebook page or on Twitter or any other social media site, which you are currently promoting. You can use some tools like ‘AddThis’ or ‘Google Analytics tool’ in order to track people clicking on your pages. For example, if you install ‘AddThis’ tool box in your site then along with a sharing button it also provides the analytic/tracking services. In order to install the analytics setup, you have to install the java script code given by AddThis in your site. Once this process is completed, you can start tracking statistics of where your visitors are sharing your website content or videos. Similarly Google provides Google Analytic services for site owner, by installing the analytic code in your site you can track,  from which site visitor is coming, how many views, downloads have done on your site etc.

Visitor Statistics

Besides this there are some special social media site tracking tools, which help in analyzing traffic, so that you know how well your social media sites are performing in terms of attracting visitors, and what is required to make further improvements. For example, Facebook provides a tool called ‘Insight’ for Facebook page owners. With the help of this tool, one can check the daily traffic to his Facebook page, along with detailed stats on the visitor distribution country-wise, and even city-wise.

- You can even check the percentage of male and female visits to your page,

- Which age group is visiting the page more?

- How many people like your post, videos or link?

- Total no. of comments you get for your post, total no. of wall posts written by your visitors etc.

All this data help you in your product production or business promotion. You can change or can make new online business strategies by using the analytic data.

Promote Your FaceBook & Twitter links

After doing all these things add some videos of your products, services and spread the word to your customers to visit your social media pages. Now that you have done the talking, let your customers give their feedback, asking them to post their comments & feedback. Make your customers feel special by asking them to share their ideas and comments to improve the experience. To make sure that customers keep visiting your social media pages, post discount schemes & other marketing offers, and make them available only through these social media sites, which will ensure that your customers keep visiting you to grab the best deals on offer.

Social Media - What exactly does it mean?

by Admin 15. April 2010 04:50

There is a lot of ‘buzz’ today with the phrase social media being tossed around by Internet Marketers and Internet enthusiasts. Many people find it difficult to give it one common definition due to the various kinds of mediums such blogs, photo sharing, videos etc., that form a part of the social media system.

Social media essentially uses internet technology and tools by which people can share content, express opinion & perspectives on any topic under the sun.

Social Media can take many forms such as

Text: People write on online forums, blogs, and microblogging

Video: Amateur Videos uploaded by your neighbour

Images: Photo that may be shot by professional photographers or the ones taken by in the holidays by your grandmother.

Audio: Audio of some interesting article or topic which you would want others to listen in to just like a radio station. Podcasting is another word for this.

Social media is a form of communication just like any other media such as Newspaper or Television. The word 'Social' got added, because of the way people could interact with others and express and share their thoughts almost instantaneously.

Since social media has the power to influence the way you think, a lot of companies and brands are now using the social media to market their products to consumers.

Some of the examples of social media websites are:

* Social Bookmarking - (Delicious, StumbleUpon) also called as social tagging- which allow users to tag websites and searching through websites bookmarked by other people.

* Social News. (Digg, Propeller, Reddit )  Interact by voting for articles and commenting on them.

* Social Networking. (Facebook, LinkedIn, MySpace, Ning, Orkut etc.,) these allow you to interact by adding friends, commenting on profiles, joining groups and sharing photos and discussions.

* Social Photo and Video Sharing. (YouTube, Flickr )  Users can interact by sharing photos or videos and commenting on user submissions.

* Wikis. (Wikipedia, Wetpaint)  Users can add articles and editing existing articles.

If you still want to know more about social media, then i recommend this nice video made by Common Craft.

Hope this post gave some insight into the meaning of social media, and maybe push you to create that Facebook page for yourself at least now.
